Our company history goes back to 1912 when a group of Venezuelan businessmen incorporated C.A. FABRICA DE PAPEL DE MARACAY (FPM), on the seashore of Valencia Lake in Aragua State, Venezuela.
However, MANUFACTURAS DE PAPEL C.A., known as MANPA throughout the country, was founded exactly on March 30, 1950 by Gustavo Delfino Arriens, Juan Delfino Rodríguez, Carlos H. Maury and Ladislao Caballero. Production was oriented toward manufacturing multiple-folding sacks aimed at meeting the needs of C.A FABRICA NACIONAL DE CEMENTOS as well as all-purpose bags for commerce and the industry in general. Both plants began operating in the same storehouse, located in Los Cortijos de Lourdes, Caracas.
Eleven years later, in 1961, we began an expansion and vertical integration stage which objective was manufacturing the paper required by the company to produce sacks and bags, thus reducing dependency of same imported raw material. This was achieved by acquiring and setting-up two paper machines with a capacity of 50 thousand annual metric tons aimed at manufacturing bright Kraft paper on one sole side, which was used to manufacture bags and Kraft resistance paper of opaque sides, specially used to manufacture multiple-folding sacks and packaging sacks.
In 1972, ,COOPERATIVA GUAYAMURE was created together with C.A FABRICA DE PAPEL DE MARACAY in order to develop industrial Caribe pine plantations to obtain raw materials and to reduce imports. Two years later, CORPORACIÓN FORESTAL IMATACA, C.A. was incorporated to develop a similar project on lands situated in Monagas State.
COOPERATIVA GUAYAMURE project took place in pieces of land apparently not suitable for sowing; however, by using advanced chemical processes this effort gave good results little by little. Therefore, the Venezuelan government decided to support this initiative and in the year 1976 CORPORACIÓN FORESTAL GUAYAMURE, C.A. was incorporated.
These forest developments reached an approximate extension of 74,000 sown hectares.
During the same year 1976, the third paper machine was set off with a production capacity of 50 thousand metric tons aimed at producing cards as well as fine printing and writing paper.
In 1989, CAHIS HERMANOS & CO. SUCESORES, C.A. was acquired, incorporating a new massive consumption product line: notebooks, spiral-bound notebooks and school textbooks ALPES brand, establishing in addition a national distribution chain.
Later on, in 1991, we made incursions into the continuous form market with the AlpesForm production lines and by the end of that same year, due to the commercial opening of the countries comprising the Andean Pact we began an aggressive export policy, establishing the Colombian market as the main initial objective.
As part of the strategy of the group’s company belonging to the forest sector and in order to increase commercial exploitation of woods, a new company called ASERRADERO VENWOOD, C.A., a subsidiary of CORPORACIÓN FORESTAL IMATACA, C.A., was incorporated in 1992 and start operating during the first quarter of 1994.
By authorization of the National Securities Commission, granted as per Resolution number 209-92 of May 6, 1992 the company becomes an Authorized Capital Public Corporation, changing its name to MANUFACTURAS DE PAPEL, C.A. (MANPA), S.A.C.A.
In December 1992, all the shares of C.A FABRICA DE PAPEL DE MARACAY (FPM) were acquired, thus increasing the financial potential of company development within the paper sector. Operating integration was the result of a close coordination that has been carried out between companies by the end of 1991.
In 1993, the project called “Máquina Papelera N# 8” began at C.A. Fábrica de Papel Maracay with the essential objective of becoming a company with a sustained export capacity, based on the experience acquired in both international markets during the ten previous years and the increase of the production capacity. The setting up of the machine was made in December 1994, and that project took a record time of 17 months.
On September 9, 1994 the Special Shareholder’s Meeting is authorized to change the par value of MANUFACTURAS DE PAPEL, C.A. (MANPA) S.A.C.A. shares from Bs. 100.00 to Bs. 10.00.
In 1994 Turbogeneradores Maracay C.A. (TGM) was established in order to self-supply electricity to plants and thus guaranteeing service reliability and cost reduction.
For May 1995, MANPA shares started to list in the Caracas Stock Exchange Market and in the Maracaibo Stock Exchange Market.
In August of this same year, an association agreement to incorporate Turbogeneradores de Venezuela (TGV) is entered into with the American company Community Energy Alternatives (CEA). The main objective of this new activity is developing independent power-producing plants to supply Venezuela industrial areas, mainly in the manufacturing sector, guaranteeing a reliable and cost-effective power service.
1996 is a year of events:
From December 26, 1997 Manufacturas de Papel C.A. (MANPA) S.A.C.A. merged with its totally owned subsidiaries (C.A. Fábrica de Papel de Maracay, Corporación Industrial Alpes S.A., Papeles Maracay C.A., Pulpa Maracay C.A., Urbanizadora Guayamure C.A. and Inversiones TCC 13 C.A.). This merger allows for reducing significant costs and administrative expenses from different legal entities.
